Comprehensive School Counseling
The question that is often asked is "What does a school counselor do?" To begin to answer this question, I think we need to start out with the answer to the question "What is a Comprehensive School Counseling Program?" Please read on to find answers to both of these questions below.
"What is a Comprehensive School Counseling Program?"
There are 4 components of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program.
Provides curriculum to all students in a systematic way.
Increases student awareness, skill development, and appreciation of skills needed in every day life.
Assists students in planning, monitoring, and managing their personal and career development.
Ongoing activities that help students plan, monitor, and manage their educational, personal, and career development.
Activities or intervention that meet the immediate needs and concerns of students
Counselor manages activities that establish maintain, and enhance the comprehensive program
Counselor participates in advisory councils, collaborates with outside agencies, consults with staff members...
"What does our school counselor do?"
*Weekly PK-2 Developmental Guidance classroom lessons using the Second Step Curriculum and other resources. The Department of Public Instruction Bullying Curriculum is used in Grade 3.
*Every-other-week 6-8 Developmental Guidance classroom lessons using the Second Step Curriculum, Department of Public Instruction Bullying Curriculum, and Project Alert.
*One-week career unit to 8th grade students.
*Meets with individual students for social/emotional/academic counseling.
*Facilitates counseling groups.
*Meets with students/families/staff members that have immediate needs or concerns.
*Participates in committees within the school
An example is the Response to Intervention Committee
*Collaborates with teachers about specific needs of students
*Advisor of the Middle School Student Council
*Advisor of the Middle School Natural Helpers
